Education & Learning Support

Education is central to SAVERA’s work. Children from economically disadvantaged and migrant families often struggle to attend school regularly because of migration, family responsibilities, lack of learning support, and livelihood pressures.

SAVERA works with children, parents, schools, teachers, and community institutions to:

  1. identify children who are out of school or irregular in attendance.
  2. support school enrolment and continuation.
  3. provide community-based learning opportunities.
  4. encourage reading, learning, and educational aspirations.
  5. support children of migrant workers whose education is disrupted and
  6. promote equal educational opportunities for girls and marginalized children.

Child Protection

Children affected by poverty, migration, and social exclusion may face increased risks of child labour, trafficking, child marriage, and school dropout.

Together with Child Labour Free Communities (CLFC), SAVERA works with families and communities to strengthen awareness, early identification, and prevention of these risks. Our work includes:

  1. prevention of child labour;
  2. prevention of child trafficking;
  3. addressing risks of child marriage;
  4. promoting continuation of education;
  5. community awareness on child rights;
  6. strengthening linkages with schools and government services; and
  7. individual support to particularly vulnerable children and families.

Safe Migration & Migrant Workers' Rights

Migration is an important livelihood strategy for thousands of families in West Champaran. Workers travel to states including Kerala, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Chhattisgarh, commonly finding employment in construction, agriculture, carpentry, factories, and other informal occupations.

Many migrate without adequate information about employment conditions, social security, occupational safety, or grievance mechanisms.

SAVERA works to make migration safer, informed, and rights-based through:

  1. awareness of labour rights and entitlements;
  2. safe migration information;
  3. migrant worker groups and peer educators;
  4. assistance with wage disputes and compensation claims;
  5. facilitation of e-Shram and other entitlements;
  6. linkages with Panchayats and government departments;
  7. engagement with District Legal Services Authorities;
  8. support networks at migration destinations; and
  9. attention to the education and health needs of migrants’ children.

Women, Adolescents & Youth Empowerment

SAVERA has worked since its early years to challenge gender inequality and unequal opportunities for women and girls.

Our work seeks to strengthen the social, economic, educational, cultural, and intellectual empowerment of women, adolescents, and young people. Activities include awareness, education, skills, career guidance, and community engagement.

We also encourage dialogue on social practices that limit opportunities, including:

  1. gender discrimination;
  2. child marriage;
  3. dowry;
  4. domestic violence;
  5. substance abuse;
  6. unequal access to education; and
  7. restrictive social norms.

Livelihoods, Agriculture & Local Products

For many rural households, sustainable livelihoods are essential to reducing poverty and distress migration.

SAVERA promotes livelihood development through:

  1. vocational and skill development;
  2. agriculture and agro-based livelihoods;
  3. awareness of organic farming and water management;
  4. self-employment;
  5. access to government livelihood schemes;
  6. promotion of locally produced goods; and
  7. strengthening connections between producers and markets.

West Champaran has considerable local knowledge and products—including agricultural and traditional products—but producers often require stronger market linkages and institutional support.

 

Responsible MSMEs & Safer Workplaces

SAVERA is expanding its livelihood and workers’ rights work to engage Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the Bettiah, Chanpatia, and Kumarbagh industrial areas.

The initiative seeks to strengthen local employment while creating safer and more responsible workplaces.

We work with MSMEs on:

  1. occupational safety and health (OSH);
  2. use of basic protective equipment;
  3. safer machinery and workplace practices;
  4. worker welfare;
  5. health awareness;
  6. responsible waste management;
  7. energy efficiency;
  8. renewable-energy awareness;
  9. Udyam registration; and
  10. access to relevant government MSME schemes.

The current initiative aims to engage approximately 20–25 MSMEs while continuing support to migrant workers and their families.

 

Community Awareness & Social Inclusion

SAVERA works against discrimination and social practices that exclude people because of caste, gender, poverty, or social status.

Community awareness initiatives address issues including untouchability, caste discrimination, gender inequality, health and hygiene, environmental conservation, government welfare schemes, and disaster preparedness.

We use village meetings, community campaigns, wall writing, information materials, and traditional communication methods such as street and puppet shows to reach communities.
